MIT Sloan MBAs Break into Media and Entertainment, Network with the Industry's Top Executives In New York City

November 5, 2003

CAMBRIDGE, MA --(BUSINESS WIRE)--MIT Sloan's savviest MBAs will gather in New York City next week to meet with movers and shakers from the entertainment and media industries. The New York MediaTrek is an annual event that brings a group of the School's most entertainment and media-focused students to New York to explore careers. They will meet with top executives from the most influential firms. Bertelsmann, MTV Networks, Miramax, the NFL, and Time Inc. are just a few of the companies the MBAs will visit November 10 and 11.

MIT Sloan's MBAs are particularly well positioned to break into the media and entertainment industry. MIT Sloan's curriculum is differentiated from other programs by its emphasis on creative management, quantitative analysis, and technology. As these skills have played an increasing role in media and entertainment, the demand for MBAs, especially from MIT Sloan, has increased. Kenny Lee, MBA '04, a Trek participant, worked as an independent filmmaker before pursuing his MBA. "I came to MIT Sloan because I have been observing a rapid integration between entertainment and technology," says Lee, "Entertainment is such a relationship-based business that we have to work hard to get to know as many people as we can."

Josh Schanker, MBA '04 and lead organizer of the New York MediaTrek says, "I believe that growth the media and entertainment industry is driven by entrepreneurship, creativity, and technology--all of which are defining aspects of MIT Sloan's curriculum," Schanker started his career at age 9 with his first role in a commercial for Oatmeal Raisin Crisp cereal. He later became founder and CEO of Sombasa Media, an online direct marketing company acquired by About.com in 2000.

The trekkers will network and mingle cocktail-style with industry executives and MIT Sloan alumni at Divine Bar (236 West 54th Street, NY, NY), Monday, November 10, from 7-9 pm. Members of the press are invited to join them and learn what the MBAs have learned on their company visits (RSVP to contacts above).
