Assante Chairman speaks at Sloan

CAMBRIDGE, MA -- Harvey Schiller, Chairman of Assante, spoke at Sloan today about his current role at the company and his career in the sports and entertainment industry. Prior jobs included serving as Chairman and CEO of YankeeNets, an integrated sports-based media company with ownership of the New York Yankees, New Jersey Nets, and New Jersey Devils; vice president, sports programming for Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS); president of Turner Sports, Inc., a division of Time Warner; and president and governor of the NHL expansion franchise, Atlanta Thrashers.

Full Biography of Dr. Harvey W. Schiller

Harvey W. Schiller, Ph.D., currently serves as Chairman of Assante U.S., a leading provider of integrated financial solutions for wealth, career and business concerns. Headquartered in Winnipeg Canada, Assante serves a diverse client base in both Canada and the United States. Assante’s operations in the U.S. include Assante Business Management, Assante Sports Management Group (encompassing the sport agent firms of Moorad Sports Management- baseball & football; Maximum Sports Management - football; M.D. Gillis & Associates Ltd.-hockey; and Fegan & Associates Inc. - basketball), Assante Global Advisors, Assante Asset Management Inc., Assante Marketing Solutions, Assante Mortgage Services and Assante Estate and Insurance Services.

Schiller recently served as Chairman and CEO of YankeeNets, an integrated sports-based media company with ownership of the New York Yankees, New Jersey Nets, and New Jersey Devils. Until December, 1999, Dr. Schiller served as vice president, sports programming for Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS); president of Turner Sports, Inc., a division of Time Warner; and president and governor of the NHL expansion franchise, Atlanta Thrashers. As such, he was responsible for the acquisition and production of all sports programming on TBS Superstation, TNT, and Turner South. He also oversaw the Goodwill Games and World Championship Wrestling.

Before joining Turner in 1994, Schiller was Executive Director/Secretary General of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC). Holding this position since 1990, he was instrumental in instituting significant changes within the organization to improve its financial health. He worked directly in support of the planning and award of the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games to the city of Atlanta. In December 1994, he was awarded the prestigious Olympic Order, the highest decorated honor presented to an individual by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Schiller joined the USOC after serving as Commissioner of the Southeastern Conference from 1986 to 1990. He also served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force (USAF) from 1962 to 1986 including combat service in Vietnam and attained the rank of colonel. In 1980, the President of the United States appointed Schiller as a Permanent Professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy. He is a recipient of several military awards including the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, and Air Medals.

Schiller earned his bachelor's degree from The Citadel and was recently inducted in their Athletic Hall of Fame. He earned his master's degree and doctorate from the University of Michigan. He also holds honorary doctorates from The Citadel and Northern Michigan University.

Schiller is active in a variety of national organizations and corporate Boards. He was recently appointed as President of the New York City Host Committee of the 2004 Republican National convention by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. He is the chairman of the Management Committee for the NYC 2012 Olympic Bid Committee. He is a member of the Independent Commission of the United States Olympic Committee created by Senate Commerce Committee to study the mission, governance and organizational structure of the USOC. He was honored with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America President’s Award. He is a member of the Board of Directors for IDT Media. He is a distinguished Visiting Professor at the Goizueta School of Business at Emory University.
